The Plan...
Work through each of the steps toward producing a finished product. Your first step is to read through these steps to become familiar with the process. The second is to decide on a possible topic. There is a list of suggested areas of interest connected to the course - see below, but this is just a list of terms, you could pair some of them if you like - but you need to do some research about one or more and develop a topic and potential thesis. You can stray from these listed topics if you have an interest not covered, as long as you check with the teacher and your idea fits within the parameters of the course - something to do with understanding Canadian society, global issues, challenges, trends or changes. Please note that the steps are designed to promote student success and a strong learning process. Students are not permitted to proceed with the Essay unless each of the three building tasks have been completed.
Task 1 Proposal Due Wednesday Nov 9th 2016 Mandatory for Essay Process to Continue
Learning Goal or Purpose
A research proposal provides structure for subsequent research and writing of an essay.
The proposal encourages students to begin working on their research papers early in the course and helps to ensure that the topics chosen are manageable and appropriate.
Guidelines or Success Criteria
Research proposals should consist of several categories of information, including the following:
o proposed title of the essay
o description of the topic and themes to be covered in the essay
o central objectives of the essay
o research question(s) (causal, interpretive, descriptive, relationship and so on)
o short explanation re: why the topic is important or relevant
o notes taken from at least 2 or 3 preliminary sources that have been/are being consulted (combination of books, texts, journals, articles)
o a tentative thesis (use the thesis submission form found below).
These notes are going to be what you build your essay from. The more detail you include, the more you will have to work with then it comes to writing your paper. Include the reference information - title, author, publisher, year, URL, website name, journal name & so on. See note taking pages below.
To be successful, you need to pull out the important information from each article or book you are using, related to your topic. These need to be in your own words, point form is fine, & it is essential that you complete the citation portion at the top of the page. Once you have the notes organized, look at the information that you have gathered and decide on a plausible thesis that you are intent on proving. Please DO NOT DO THIS BACKWARDS! You can not successfully develop a thesis without knowing some information about your topic. If you are using a suggested thesis, you will need to complete the research, and then assess if the thesis works for you or if you need to tweak it a little.
