Learning Goal
I will learn about what oppression means and privilege. I will learn about how personal identities intersect and how they exist for each of us in a social context. I will know about the idea of double or triple or multiple oppress ions. Minds On The Sociometry of Oppression exercise. Each student will draw an "identity". These are random, once you have yours - DO NOT SHOW IT to anyone. Line up at the end of the classroom facing the court yard. Wait for the list of questions. Based on your new identity move forward one step if the answer is a yes for each question being read. Some of you are in very different positions by the end of the list of questions. Why? Let's share our identities. How can having more than one identity that is not in the group of majority (power) impact a person's life and ease with which they exist and function? Write down the definition of privilege, oppression, multiple oppression. Dis cuss the difference between prejudice and discrimination. Is the status quo fair? Why is our society like this?
